Floating height of the Head-Stack Unit

The illustration below shows how close the read heads float over the magnetic media where the data is captured or stored. I would like to discuss this topic a bit more. It is amazing how close these heads get to the platters without touching them. A modern hard disk has a floating distance of 0.5 micro-inches, to put this into perspective, a human hair has a thickness of over 2000 micro-inches. Now we can see how important it is to never try and open a hard drive in a non clean environment. The floating height of the read/write heads are in fact smaller than the circuitry of a microprocessor.
