However, no one authority has appeared to define what a computer forensic certification should entail, which means investigations, can vary wildly in terms of quality.

Computer forensics is a complex field that requires many different skills and whilst the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) has published a set of guidelines for interrogating electronic evidence, they do not legislate for certification.

RAID Data Recovery Case Study

We received a 6-drive RAID array from a Data Recovery company in Austria. It had previously been to two other Data Recovery companies around the world. None of the three were able to recover the data, so they approached us.

Two drives in the array had been swapped over by the administrator and then a rebuild of the raid had been attempted. After approximately 1% into the rebuild, the process fortunately crashed, preventing all the data from being completely and permanently overwritten. This RAID controller was not an intelligent controller, and did not detect that the incorrect hard disks had been swapped out.

Most organisations know the dangers of failing to back-up their critical data. However, what would happen if your web files were damaged or lost? How many organisations routinely back-up their website files, or more importantly the database that powers these?

No matter how much you trust your hosting company, disasters happen to everyone. You might also decide to change hosts, in which case you will need to migrate your website and database. In either case, you should have a full backup of your files from which you can easily restore, without losing any important data. By making regular website backups an organisation can always feel safe that it’s data will not be lost due to a virus attack or server failure.

Disposing of Old Hard Drives Safely and Securely

Recent security breaches in the public sector are simply higher profile repeats of similar breaches within the private sector that have surfaced with increased regularity. Companies and organisations need to establish and enforce policies when an employee upgrades to a new machine or leaves the company.

If you intend to reuse any computers, all traces of applications and information should be removed from the hard drive inside. A quick format, system restore or windows deletion does not securely erase the information. The only guaranteed method is to degauss the hard drive, which requires specialist hardware. Degaussing is the process of decreasing or eliminating an unwanted magnetic field.

Where are the tracks of my online activity recorded?

Apart from your temporary internet history folder, which is easily erased, all your online activity is recorded in a hidden index file, which is only accessable with specialist tools.

Index.dat files are hidden on your computer hard drive and contain tracks of all your online activity – where have you been on the internet, what sites you visited, list of URL-s, files and documents you recently accessed. The index.dat runs as long as a user is logged on in Windows and it’s role is to help speed up query responses.

Salman (Sal) Khan lives in California. He was a stellar student and valedictorian of his high school. With a MBA from Harvard Business School and a BS in Mathematics from MIT, he’s always been a hard-working learner with little time to play around and watch Youtube videos. He had a lucrative career in hedge funds, but that all changed when he discovered the power behind his passion for teaching.

Revealing deleted data

Deleted files can often be recovered some time after a deletion. Most file systems only mark them as deleted in the index. These are labelled as “orphan files”. Therefore, they can be undeleted until the disk blocks they occupy, are eventually taken up by other files written to the hard disk. Most file systems only remove the link to data, not the actual data itself. Most actions on a hard drive are stored in some way – for instance internet history can be found in the index.dat file in C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 folder.
