Here we have a Maxtor Maxline Plus 2, 250GB ATA/133 HDD. The drive was diagnosed by a leading Mac support company as making pronounced clicking noises. They had been running the HDD in this state for about two days.

We received the drive shortly after. The hard disk was examined in our labs and we have come to the conclusion that the data is unrecoverable. As one can see from the image, there is extensive scorning over the “landing area” of the head-stack. The biggest problem we face when it comes to data recovery form hard drives are that clients make the big mistake of running downloaded “free software” on these drives that start showing signs of mechanical failure. Mechanical meaning “clicking” or “clunking” noises.

We urge clients to switch of their computers or servers running Raid config’s, as this will decrease the chances of losing the data. By running these failing drives, the result is clearly shown in the image. No Data can be recovered from this situation.
